Black and White hues of the slow-flowing river in 'The Footbridge’ painting are matched above Jeanne’s head. The monograms are similarly positioned near the stone-pier and mantel clock.

Early Example of Sequencing

Sisley returns to the background color hues and positioning of the monogram next to a prominent feature.

Background

Early example possibly relates to a poignancy about 'The Footbridge’ painting as a 'lost canvas’.
’The Lesson’ painting belongs to a period of re-newed optimism in the family life of the Sisleys, with the artist engaging Pierre and Jeanne with his unobtrusive monogram.
