Alfred Sisley – Monogram Claim

Sequencing Motif: Art Case

Discovery of Sequencing Motif

Sequencing in 'The Lesson’ ©1874 and 'A Path at Les Sablons’ 1883 and 'Snow Scene: Moret Station’ 1888 link these paintings to The Footbridge’ ©1867 and are a Sequencing Motif

Memorising The Sequence

’The Footbridge’ monogram is re-contextualised in 'The Lesson’ ©1874.
Because of this link, it is reasonable to reference the provenance of the later work.
Signed by the unobtrusive monogram, Sisley kept 'The Lesson’ ©1874 all his life.
In all probability, this was the intention for the earlier monogrammed work.

It seems likely, the Sequencing Motif is related to a poignancy for a ”lost” canvas:

          Bougival Period (1867-1870)

Early works by Sisley, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro were lost due to the Franco-Prussian war. Sisley’s residence in Bougival and Camille Pissarro’s residence in nearby Louveciennes were commandered during the Prussian siege of Paris. Paintings by Monet stored at Pissarro’s residence, 22 Route de Versailles
see page: Lost Paintings of the late 1860’s and The Impressionist Palette

Examples of Sequencing are part of distinct periods in the life of the artist:

Early 1870’s    'The Lesson’
Artistic collaboration at Louvecieene with his close friend, Renoir

Year 1883    A Path at Les Sablons
Edouard Manet died on 30th April 1883. The central figure of the Batignolles Group at Cafe Guerbois, Paris, in the late 1860’s.
The funeral on 3rd May 1883 was hugely attended and Sisley met-up with Renoir, Pissarro and Monet.

Late 1880’s    Snow Scene, Moret Station
Increasingly withdrew from the Impressionist Group re-unions held in Paris.
