WOODLAND SCENE PALETTE

A significant preference for the landscape artist in the depiction of woodland scenes, was to return to the palette colors of  'The Footbridge’ painting.

Herbst in Louveciennes palette consists of autumnal colors (darker greens, browns and yellows) and the painting displays the Corot influence of tonality and composition (edge of a wood, with buildings behind a screen of trees).
In a matter of months after completing this work, Sisley painted  'The Lesson’  and  'The Bridge at Hampton Court’.

’Rest along the Stream. Edge of the Wood’ dated 1878

Janice Anderson, Art Historian, states that 'stylistically’ this appears to be an earlier work based on a rather darker palette and more heavily applied paint from which the characteristically 'Impressionist shorter brush-strokes are largely absent’.
(’The life and Works of Sisley’: Parragon)

The work appears to be another example of Sisley’s preference for the woodland scene palette.
