Origin of 'The Footbridge’ monogram
In 'Lise with a Parasol’ Renoir carves his initials on the bark of the tree-trunk.
Old Artistic Device: Proof of his love for Lise Trehot, model and companion in the period 1865 – 1872.
Working with Renoir in the forest of Fontainebleau in the 1860’s, Sisley would have known that this painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1868. Sisley himself models with Lise Trehot for Renoirs work 'A Couple’ c1868 (1).
In The Footbridge c1867, Sisley departs from this initialling technique by placing his monogram in close proximity to the approaching female figure.
Likely to be Eugenie Lescouezec his partner. 1867 is the start of Sisley’s family life with the birth of Pierre on 17th June 1867.
